Opel gt drag cars for sale1/21/2024 The headlights were mechanical and both flipped in the same direction using a hand brake looking thing on the console. Saturn Aura = a later model of the Opel Vectra Other GM cars that were Opels or Opel based In a bit of irony, some of the new "Buicks" are really Opels. GM also had a large stake in Isuzu, so GM decided for the 1976 model year to start bringing in these ugly little Isuzus that were badged as "Opel by Isuzu." I remember at the time thinking that Adam Opel was probably spinning in his grave over that one. ![]() Suddenly the Buick dealers realized they would no longer have a small gas sipping car to sell and were upset, demanding a small economy car. They were now costing about as much as a "real car" (in other words a Buick to the dealer's mind) so GM decided they would no longer import Opels after the 1975 model year. Due to the exchange rate by the early seventies, the German Opels were no longer inexpensive economy cars. This gave rise to a bumper sticker I remember seeing on several Opels "I Love My Opel, But I Hate My Buick Dealer". As Greasyman said, they were sold through Buick dealers who for the most part it seems, largely resented having these sell those funny little furrin' cars. The Opels were imported from Germany starting sometime in the 1950s. Quite a few still for sale.Ĭar handled badly. I never understood how GM let that car go without a lawsuit. You are very right about the more show than go. Imagine that car all hunkered down on some fat tires with an S2000 engine screaming at 9000 rpm as it carved it's way up a hillside. It would be a great car to do a really extensive mod to, with a tube frame, S2000 engine, etc. ![]() They are great looking, I like the simple rear with the 4 round lights, looks very 1970's Italian. From what I've heard they're more show than go, quite unremarkable as far as performance.
